Questions to Consider:

  1. In verse 19, Paul eventually tells us his goal in hoping to send Timothy to this church. What is that goal? What would Timothy be after? As we've received this letter, similar to the original recipients, how are we responding to it's various truths? What practical steps are we taking, for instance, towards biblical evangelism, prayer, courage, unity, humility, service, knowing the Gospel, etc.?
  2. In verse 20, Paul begins to commend Timothy to them. What's distinct about Timothy? How does Paul put it in this verse?
  3. In verse 21, Paul builds on what it means for Timothy to have a genuine concern for the church's welfare. How does he further detail this commendation? How might we come to have more of our interests reflecting more of Christ's interests? Think back to the Christ Hymn. What might be some of the emphases of Christ for His church with which we should genuinely concern ourselves? Just think on the scope of this letter. How does this connect back to 2:3-4? Should we 'each' be like Timothy? Then, why is his heart so rare?
  4. In verse 22, Paul continues to commend Timothy. This is the heart of the text, Timothy's commendation. How does Paul further establish the trustworthiness of Timothy? By so commending Timothy, what's Paul's purpose with us? See the sermon title.
  5. In verses 23-24, Paul means to comfort this church, not only by Timothy's hopeful arrival, but by his own. Both here and in 2:19, Who does Paul hope in and/or trust to bring this about? Does Paul make plans without submitting to the Lord's providence? Should we? Do we? Think on James 4:13-17.
