Let All The Earth Keep Silence: God's Messages to the Self-Exalting

George Marshall - 4/16/2024

About

Call to worship: Psalm 138

Text: Habakkuk 2:5-20

Summary:

God's answer to Habakkuk continues. Having addressed his own people, he now directs his attention to Babylon. Though this nation may think its power uncontestable, it will find that all its wickedness will come back on its head. Though his people are chastened, God has not abdicated his throne. He still rules heaven and earth. He still speaks. And all that would boast in themselves and stand in opposition to his glory will be silenced.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Read Habakkuk 2:5-20.
  2. In what way has greed brought judgment on Babylon? How does our thirst to find satisfaction in the accumulation of things distract us from worshiping God and lead to judgment? How does materialism affect our relationship with other people? (vv 5-8)
  3. How does the domination of sin affect our ability to plan and make good decisions? Is it okay to sin if the end result seems to be beneficial? In what ways do you seek security or safety? How could good desires for the safety and well-being of your family, city, or nation be twisted into sinful behaviors and policies? (vv 9-17)
  4. Why are idols an affront to God's glory? What are you tempted to make an idol in your own life? What is the importance of speech in regards to idols? What impact is there in God being "in his holy temple"? (vv18-20)
  5. Read Luke 6:20-26. What similarities stand out between our passage and Jesus' statements? What are some tangible plans you can make or actions you can take to respond to Jesus' teaching on what promotes the "good life"?
