About

Call to worship: Romans 8:31-39

Text: Genesis 3:15

  1. Context: The serpent's devastation of God's creation
  2. Content: The redemptive revelation of God's serpent-crushing Christ, Gen 3:15
  3. The three most immediate Consolations that we have in Gen 3:15:
    • We get to witness our God back our adversary into an inescapable doom
    • We can know that we can never fall so low but God's grace is able to raise us up
    • We can know that God's purpose of redemption in Christ will prevail

Questions to Consider:

  1. Read Genesis 1-3:14. What's the broad context of God's promise in Genesis 3:15? How does this make Genesis 3:15 all the more incredible?
  2. In Genesis 3:15, there seems to be three distinct entities that God puts at odds against the serpent (Satan). Who are they are?
  3. Same verse, who are the serpent's offspring and who are the woman's offspring? Read John 8:31-47; 1 John 3:4-10
  4. Same verse, notice that the woman's offspring gets whittled to One, 'He.' Who might that be ultimately? Read Galatians 3:16; also 2 Corinthians 1:19-20
  5. I would argue that this verse is the fountainhead of every consolation we, as Christians, encounter in the Word of God and life. It's promise, now accomplished in great and irreversible measure, is fulfilled in the Gospel of Jesus. What does it counteract from the Fall? What consolations then do follow from it? Think of some. If you thought forever, you'd have thoughts forever still!
