Prepare

Discussion Questions:

  1. Read John 2:1-12.
  2. What is the importance of timing in this narrative? What does Jesus mean by, "My hour has not yet come"? (vv1-4)
  3. What would the experience of an abundance of good wine mean to the residents of Cana in Galilee? What would be something in your own life that you would receive with the same gladness? (vv6-10; see also Isaiah 25, Jeremiah 31:10-14, Amos 9:11-15)
  4. What do you think it means that Jesus "manifested his glory"? How is John's portrayal of Jesus' deeds different from that of Matthew (for instance)? What does this tell us about John's intentions in writing his Gospel? (v11)
  5. Why does John emphasize the belief of the disciples following this interaction? How is this related to Nathanael's reaction in 1:49, and Jesus' response in 1:50-51? (v11)
