About

Call to worship: Ezekiel 34:11-24

Text: John 10:22-30

Sermon Outline

  1. The basis of real belief in Jesus, 10:22-27.
    • God's electing grace, 10:26, 29.
    • Christ's 'knowing' grace, 10:27.
  2. A marvelous benefit for real believers in Jesus, 10:28-30: Eternal security. Put three ways:
    • In terms of Christ's gift, 10:28a.
    • In terms of Christ's grip, 10:28b.
    • In terms of Christ's God-ness (His co-equal deity with the Father), 10:29-30.

Prepare

Questions to Consider:

  1. Most of all, what I'd like for you to do is read the sermon text together as a family prior to corporate worship. Do that, pray it, discuss it as spouses, as parents. Some questions to help:
  2. Can you have a faith in God that's not God's faith, that is, the faith that God gives, true faith? Jesus' audience believes in God. But do they believe in God's Son, Jesus Christ? How do we know (see how they respond to His words in 10:31)?
  3. What's the difference between those who hear about Jesus and believe and those who don't (10:26-27)? Why does one believe and another not?
  4. For those who believe, how would you summarize the benefit Jesus teaches in 10:28-30?
  5. You see how these unbelieving 'believers' respond to Jesus in 10:31. How do you respond? Would you throw stones at Him? Or would ask God to remove your stony heart, so you can believe and follow Jesus? Christ's sheep will take great comfort from these words. Are they comforting to you?
